Title
ESS-7C6ED0 Roman 'snake-headed' zoomorphic plate brooch
Description
English: Roman (2nd century) cast copper alloy and enamel plate brooch with zoomorphic terminal. The central plate is sub-rectangular in plan with the two side edges being concave. The surface is divided into four sections, two being triangular and two being elongated ‘C’ shapes (one is inverted) following the sides of the plate. Each of these sections are recessed and contain traces of orange enamel, the remaining areas are covered in corrosion products. The reverse of the plate is plain and undecorated. The pin mechanism is at the end of a projecting arm perpendicular to the main plate. This arm is an elongated ‘D’ shape in cross section, with a moulded collar at each end. There is an incomplete and off centre loop projecting at the top of the arm. At the end of the arm are rectangular wings with a damaged central lug which would have secured the axis bar and chord of the missing sprung pin. The foot is in the form of a snakes-head which is ‘D’ shaped in cross section, has a raised collar towards the main plate, and a raised, moulded ‘V’ before expanding out into an oval with a small worn rectangular knop at its terminal. The upper surface has two depressed circles representing eyes, located to ether side of the ‘V’ shaped moulding. The reverse of the foot has a small integrally cast triangular catchplate, with three small circular perforations. The catchplate is folded over on its longer edge to secure the missing pin. The brooch has a dark green patina, and there is corrosion on much of the upper surface. The main plate of the brooch is 24.08mm long, 14.52mm wide at the top, decreasing to 8.75mm before expanding out to 19.68mm. The plate is 3.33mm thick. The projecting arm is 5.71mm long, 8.58mm wide, 3.65mm thick. The wings are 17.72mm long, 4.46mm wide, 3.55mm thick. The zoomorphic foot is 12.81mm long, 7.01mm wide at the collar and increasing to a maximum width of 7.74mm. The foot is 4.12mm thick, increasing to 8.68mm to include the catchplate. The brooch has an overall length of 40.61mm and a depth of 12.76mm. It weighs 12.35 grams. Brooches of this type are more commonly equal ended (see Hattatt, brooches of Antiquity page 205) with a circular or lozengeform central plate. This example is of British manufacture, but similar types are also found on the continent (pers. comm. Nina Crummy).
