Title |
ESS-C122F6 palaeolithic handaxe |
||
Description |
English: Palaeolithic knapped flint cordate handaxe. The axe is sub-oval in plan, with a rounded butt end and point. There is a later fracture removing a large flake on one side side of the axe. In profile the axe is straight sided. The surface is predominantly covered with scars from flake removal, with increased level of removals around the butt end. There is a small amount of cortex surviving in the middle of one surface of the axe, however the majority of the surface is a light-cream to white colour due to heavy patination. Later removals caused by damage have a lighter patination, with even more recent damage showing no patination, revealing the dark grey flint.
The axe is 107.89mm long, 88.34mm wide, 28.07mm thick and weighs 109 grams. |
