English: An incomplete cast copper alloy buckle of Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) date (c.500-c. 600).
The pin is missing. The buckle frame is ‘D’-shaped in plan and sub-oval in cross-section. The narrowed bar is circular in cross-section and has a diameter of 3.6mm. One face of the frame is slightly flattened, presumably, this is the rear face. This buckle is severely corroded and has prominent corrosion blisters. Some active bronze disease is present. Traces of tinning present. It is possible that the buckle has been subject to burning. 25.1 x 35.6 x 8.6mm. Weight: 25.21g. The buckle is similar to several unprovenanced examples from the Chessell Down, Isle of Wight, Anglo-Saxon cemetery (Arnold 1982, fig. 28). A sixth century date is proposed by Arnold for this cemetery. |
