Title
Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) Buckle Pin
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy buckle pin of Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) date (c. AD 450 - c. AD 600). Length: 31.2mm; width: 10.0mm and 15.5mm thick. Weight: 5.14g.

These pins are traditionally known as 'shield on tongue' types. In plan, the 'shield' element is 'waisted' at each side and curved at the end. The shaft (tongue) is D-shaped in cross-section throughout its length and is flat on the under side. The pin-tip curves downwards slightly and is rounded at the end. There is no sign of wear on the underside of the pin-tip where it would have made contact with the outside edge of the frame. On the underside of the shaft, throughout its length, there is an off-centre casting seam. This seam continues along to the stub of a loop which is also off-centre. Around the stub there is a deposit of iron staining. A small area of iron staining is also present on the top of the 'shield'.

This pin is in a stable condition and has a mid-green patina overall. There is no evidence of burning or melting.

This buckle is similar to several unprovenanced examples from the Chessell Down, Isle of Wight Anglo-Saxon cemetery (Arnold 1982, fig. 28). A sixth century date is proposed by Arnold for this cemetery.
