Title
Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) Buckle Pin
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy buckle pin of Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) date (c. 450- c. 600). These pins are traditionally known as 'shield on tongue' types. In plan, the 'shield' element is 'waisted' at each side and curved at the end. The shaft (tongue) is 'D'-shaped in cross-section throughout its length and is flat on the under side. The pin-tip curves downwards slightly and is rounded at the end. There is no sign of wear on the underside of the pin-tip where it would have made contact with the outside edge of the frame. A stub of an iron loop survives on the underside of the 'shield' part. This buckle pin has traces of a mid-green patina. However, it is severely corroded in places. It also has some small areas that are smooth and tinned. Although this pin is corroded and the loop is largely missing, it is in a stable condition. There is no evidence of burning or melting. 39.1 x 17.4 x 7.3mm. Weight: 19.87g. This buckle is similar to several unprovenanced examples from the Chessell Down, Isle of Wight Anglo-Saxon cemetery (Arnold 1982, fig. 28).
