Title
Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) Buckle Pin
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy buckle pin of Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) date (c. 450-c. 600). Part of the shaft and the loop are missing due to old breaks. It has a 'shield'-shaped plate. In plan, the plate is rounded at the end and incurved at the sides. On the centre-line, close to the end, there is a circular depression which has a diameter of 4.1mm. The base of the depression has a reddish appearance and may, in fact, be the corroded top of the separate loop. It is possible that the top of the loop was deliberately obscured by decorative material, although, none has survived. The shaft appears to be 'D'-shaped in cross-section, flat on the underside. However, due to corrosion and some loss of material it is not possible to accurately describe the shape of the cross-section. The loop is definitely a separate entity and is sub-rectangular in cross-section measuring 2.5 x 1.8mm. The shaft of the pin has a maximum width of 7.1mm and is 4.3mm thick. On the underside of the plate there are two transverse grooves (about 1.3mm in width), one either side of the loop. It is interesting to note that these two grooves are not quite on the same alignment and their use is unclear. This buckle pin is generally in a poor condition. It has traces of a shiny greyish green patina which may indicate that it has a high tin content. There is some evidence of burning on the curved edge, close to the end of the plate, where the metal is a pale greyish colour. 25.6 x 13.1 x 9.7mm. Weight: 5.47g.
