Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) Buckle Pin |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) cast copper-alloy buckle pin (c. 450-c. 600). Part of the shaft and the loop are missing due to old breaks. It has a 'shield'-shaped plate. In plan, the plate is rounded at the end and incurved at the sides. The upper face has seven ring-and-dot motifs, six are arranged in a circle close to the edge and the seventh one is at the centre.
The incomplete shaft is 'D'-shaped in cross-section, flat on the underside. Adjacent to the plate it is slightly 'waisted' on the top and on each side (but not on the underside). About half of the shaft survives and the broken end is covered with corroded iron and iron staining. On the underside, close to the rounded end, there is a stub of the loop which is made of iron. The break on the loop appears to be fresh. This buckle pin is corroded and in poor condition. It is thickly coated in tinning. However, some tinning is lost due to corrosion and damage. No evidence for burning or melting. 35.5 x 21.4 x 11.2mm. Weight: 24.81g. |
