Title
Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) Buckle Pin
Description
English: An incomplete and burnt Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) cast copper-alloy buckle pin (c. 575-c. 625).

The pin loop is largely missing.

This pin is a 'shield-on-tongue' type. The integral plate over the pin is shaped like a violin. It is flat on the upper face and on the underside. In plan, it has a rounded end then a waist formed by two rounded cut-outs (opposite each other). The iron embedded loop is made of iron and only the stub survives. The shaft of the pin is 'D'-shaped in cross-section and the tip curves down at an angle of about 80°.

The surfaces are tinned or the metal has a high tin content. 'Bubbly' areas and also fractures at the tip of the shaft and on the side of the rounded end may indicate that it has been burnt. There are iron deposits on the upper surface and on the underside.

Length: 37.74mm; width: 19.16mm; thickness at stub: 7.39mm. Weight: 14.99g.
