Title |
Early-Medieval Buckle |
||
Description |
English: A cast copper alloy early medieval buckle frame dating from AD 900- 1100 AD. The frame is D-shaped and is missing the inside edge of the frame and the buckle pin. The terminals of the loop are zoomorphic in form and the inside edge would originally have connected the two animal heads. These are stylised animals seen on various objects from this period and could be dogs/dragons/dolphins; it is difficult to see. They have a rounded head with an elongated snout. The buckle has a reddish patina and is very worn.
A similar buckle can be found illustrated in Ottaway and Rogers (2002: 2892; fig 1468, 14316). Compare SWYOR-F075E4, DUR-F45F98 and YORYM-667D71. |
