Title |
Early-Medieval Buckle Pin |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy buckle pin of Early Early-Medieval, fifth or sixth century date (AD 450 - AD 600). Length: 44.3mm; maximum width: 19.5mm and 13.6mm thick. Weight: 24.79g.
The upper face of the flat plate is about 23.0mm in length and has a maximum width of 19.5mm. In plan, it has a rounded outer end and is ‘waisted’ at the centre to form a characteristic "fiddle" shape. It has a shaft, 21.3mm in length, which is D-shaped in cross-section (convex on the upper face) and tapers to form a blunt tip. The tip curves down and there is no evidence of wear on its underside where it made contact with the frame. On the flat reverse there are several linear striations which might have been created by filing. Beneath the plate, at the centre, is a stub, all that remains of the integral loop. No evidence for tinning, melting or burning.Except for the damage to the loop, the pin is in good condition. It has a mid-green patina overall except where there is a deposit of corroded iron at the junction of the plate and the pin shaft. |
