Title
Early-Medieval to Medieval Buckle With Integral Plate
Description
English: A near complete copper alloy buckle frame with hinged copper alloy plate that is missing the pin due to old breaks. It has a D-shaped frame with integral narrow offset bar, projecting terminals at the point where the bar joins the frame, and flaring exterior edge. The back face of the frame is flat and undecorated, however the front face has extensive moulded decoration in high relief. This appears to be zoomorphic in form, and seemingly depicts two quadrupedal creatures with sub-oval shaped bodies and thin legs, probably facing one another. The gap between the creatures provides an adequate V-shaped pin slot. The frame narrows towards the bar and the animal's bodies extend around towards the bar, but seemingly do not grasp or form an integral part of the junction between bar and frame.

Attached to the frame is a small copper alloy buckle plate. This has a square upper plate with square frame recesses and a rectangular pin slot. A grooved border follows all four edges of the plate and two small cylindrical rivets with round, flattened heads are visible at the inner end, piercing both upper and lower plates. There are possible traces of gilding between the two rivets and perhaps on the hinges, although this remains uncertain due to corrosion and wear. The two integral hinge loops are folded around the bar joining both upper and lower plates together. The lower plate is of identical length to the upper plate, but is only as wide as the bar of the frame, giving it a rectangular shape that lacks frame recesses but still contains the rectangular pin slot. The two rivets can also be seen on the reverse plate, but this has suffered from some post-depositional corrosion and it is uncertain whether it was decorated or not. The gap between both plates is full of encrustation but it is possible that parts of the strap to which it was originally attached may be preserved.

The entire object measures 28.80mm in length, 20.23mm in height, 5.26mm in thickness, and weighs 4.83g. Dr. Kevin Leahy (pers. comm.) notes that this buckle appears to be of later Early-Medieval to early Medieval date, probably dating to the 12th century AD.
