Title |
Early-medieval buckle: Buckle plate |
||
Description |
English: A cast copper alloy buckle plate, dating from the early-medieval period and probably the 10th to 11th century AD. The buckle plate consists of one rectangular sheet of copper alloy folded over; two lugs at one end of the plate would have fitted over the pin bar of a buckle. The other end of the plate is open but two copper alloy rivets remain, and would have secured the leather strap inside the plate. The face of the plate is decorated with a scrolled or entwinned animal pattern, but it is too worn to discern properly. The face was gilded, much of which remains whereas the reverse of the plate is undecorated. There is some damage to the reverse of the plate but otherwise it is in good condition. |
