Title
Early-medieval buckle: Late Anglo-Saxon buckle
Description
English: A cast copper alloy late Anglo-Saxon D-shaped buckle in the Borre Style. The buckle has a large animal's head on the outer curve of the buckle frame with two further small heads projecting outwards from the reverse of the frame either side of the pin bar. The animal's heads are all of the same design with two recesses representing the eyes and a thin line for the mouth and (worn) projections for the ears. The large eye recesses of the bigger animal head probably held glass or stones. The frame itself has the remains of segmented geometric decoration although this is now quite worn. The pin bar is recessed from the rest of the frame and probably once held a strap plate' the copper alloy pin currently attached to this buckle appears to be a repair as the patina is completely different to that of the buckle frame.

Other examples of this type of buckle on the PAS database include SF-9F02E3, SF-79DAF8, SF-76F478, NMS-9B0AC7 and CORN-EC5F13, and rectangular variants at HAMP-BA9FC0 and LVPL-99FBD2 (found in Suffolk). This style of buckle is dated to the 10th and 11th century AD.
