Early-medieval buckle: Openwork buckle and plate |
||
Description |
English: A cast copper alloy buckle and plate of elaborate form and surviving in good condition. The buckle is broadly rectangular in plan with crescentic edges and pointed, phallic-like projections from the outer edges (only one survives). It is decorated with linear patterns of geometric form all over the upper side, while the reverse is plain and undecorated. The buckle plate is made from one sheet of copper alloy folded over on itself and is rectangular in plan. There is a moulded constriction where the plate joins the buckle; the pin is missing. The reverse of the buckle plate is a short rectangular tab and is raised from the front plate so a leather strap could be inserted between the two; two rivets on the tab of the plate would have held the strap in place.The buckle itself is rectangular in plan with knops at each corner and a narrowed pin rest.
Parallels for this buckle have not yet been found in the usual literature. However, three similar buckles have been recorded on this database (NARC-0B7FB8, BH-542C82 and BH-53FE54). A brooch with similar combination of crescent and foliage motifs was recorded in Lancashire and Cumbria at LANCUM-967396 (2003 T363). This brooch was dated to the 14th century, and the buckles may well be of a similar date, although parallels from secure contexts are needed to be able to date the buckles more conclusively. |
