Title |
Early-medieval buckle |
||
Description |
English: A copper-alloy buckle of Medieval (13th to 14th century) date.
The frame and plate have been cast in one piece. The frame is sub-oval in plan, has downward sloping outer edges and, although heavily corroded, the upper surface appears to have moulded ropework decoration. The attachment end of the corroded iron pin is held within a hole in a narrow section at the frame end of the plate; the distal end of the pin rests on the outer edge of the frame. The plate tapers towards the proximal end (ie. that furthest from the frame). The upper surface has moulded decoration which appears to depict an animal head, with the ears, eyes and nose being clearly visible, despite the level of corrosion. A single short rivet of circular section is visible on the reverse, close to the proximal end of the plate and would have served to attach the buckle to a leather belt. The object measures 30.5mm long, 14.8mm wide and 6.6mm thick. The weight is 2.97g. |
