Title |
Early-medieval crucifix |
||
Description |
English: A cast lead-alloy crucifix. A cast plate, originally cruciform in plan, (now damaged), with the body of Christ appearing in identically-moulded relief on both sides. The face has elongated, oval eyes, a large nose and a slit mouth. A triangular arrangement above the head, on the cross, has four sunken dots along each of its angled sides and is open to interpretation as to what it represents. Three dots, in relief, on the torso may represent nipples and navel, with the ribcage also emphasised. Alternatively, they may be a reference to the Holy trinity. One arm of the crucifix has been broken off and is missing but the remaining arm is outstretched with enlarged splayed fingers and a crescentic depression for the palm. The lower body is covered by a long tunic with vertical folds but is broken and bent across the bottom and the feet are not visible. A curve at the top suggests the loss of a suspension loop. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 950-1150. An almost identical and near-complete example is recorded on the PAS database as NLM-AD60CD. A very close parallel in copper-alloy is recorded as NCL-C947D7.
