Title
Early-medieval stirrup: Stirrup mount
Description
English: An almost complete cast copper alloy stirrup strap mount dating to the late early-medieval period. Sub-rectangular plate slightly tapering towards broken upper end, obliquely-angled flange with a single rivet hole. Towards the apex of the mount is another, slightly off-set rivet hole (a repair) just beneath the break at the apex which would have contained the original rivet hole. Engraved decoration on the face comprises engraved symmetrical knotwork in Ringerike style and dates from the 11th century AD. David Williams says that this stirrup mount is 'another Unclassfied Class A' (see Williams 1997). 'Union knot with pendent lobe and opposed spirals'. David suggests that it is similar to his Class 15 (1997:78) with figure 358, from Kent, being similar in both the decorative style and the location of the rivet holes.
