Title |
Early-medieval strap fitting |
||
Description |
English: A late early-medieval copper-alloy strap fitting. The object is sub-trapezoidal and elongated, broken across the narrower end with the terminal missing. The wider end is expanded into three rounded lobes. The artefact has numerous, unevenly-spaced holes of various sizes and shapes across its face which would, originally, have been incorporated into a complex openwork design with additional engraving, possibly intertwining. The object is very corroded and has now lost all definition of other design elements. It is cracked across its width through the largest hole, towards the wider end. One of the holes, in the centre, close to the expanded end, has the remains of an iron rivet in-situ. The reverse of the object is flat except for the backs of each of the three lobes which are slightly hollowed. The style of the object, with its asymmetric decoration, suggests an 11th-century date.
The object measures 51.59 by 27.48 mm. It is 2.54 mm and weighs 14.44 g Similar objects are described in the 2015 PAS section of Medieval Archaeology, 'A group of 11th-century 'ball-ended' strap fittings', by Steven Ashley and Andrew Rogerson.
