Title
Early Medieval - Medieval: buckle
Description
English: Cast copper alloy single looped buckle of probable early medieval or medieval date 1000 – 1250 AD. The buckle frame is sub-circular (oval D shape) in plan and sub-rectangular in cross section. The pin is missing but it is likely that it would have been formed from a sub-rectangular length of copper alloy. There is no pin rest present or constriction on the frame to enable the pin to lie flat. Where the axis bar meets the edge of the frame are two small projections, it is likely that the axis bar fitted onto a rectangular shaped plate formed from a sheet of copper alloy. The plate would have been attached to the buckle frame by folding and riveting it to the leather strap.

The buckle frame measures 15.0mm length, 13.3mm width and is 3.7mm thick. It weighs 2.02 grams.

The frame is decorated with a series of cast U shaped grooves. These are limited to the outer edge of the frame close to the axis bar. It is possible that these elements (which mirror each other) are debased dog heads; this is a relatively common decorative motif on Romanesque styled artefacts. The buckle is a mid brown green colour with an uneven abraded patina which covers all surfaces. Movement in the ploughsoil has twisted the plate in profile, making it slightly irregular. A direct parallel has not been found but it is similar to HESH-35BB80.
