Title
Early Medieval Cruciform Brooch
Description
English: The footplate of a copper alloy Anglo Saxon cruciform brooch. The brooch is missing the headplate. At the top there are two protruding wings in the form of elaborate S shapes. The panel is divided into a further three panels. The first plate at the top is decorated with four dots down either side. The second underneath is undecorated. The panel at the bottom of the brooch begins with a ridge and is decorated with two knobs, above which is another V shaped ridge. There is a line down the centre of this panel, above the V shape it is a simple incised vertical line and below it is made up of a series of horizontal incised lines. The metal is a grey/black colour and is well preserved, although there are some wear marks on the brooch.

Parallels can be found in West, S. (1998) A corpus of Anglo Saxon material from Suffolk, Suffolk: County Council Planning Department. See figure 147, number 4 and figure 148, number 10.
