Title
Early Medieval Hooked Tag
Description
English: A sheet copper-alloy, sub-circular, single-sharp-hooked clasp of Early Medieval date; Read class A, Type 2. The front of the clasp has a central, equal-armed cross, made up of double rows of punched triangles, within a border also made up of a double row of punched triangles. The reverse is undecorated. There are two circular drilled attachment holes at top of the clasp, the opposite end narrowing slightly to an old break where the hook has been broken away and is missing.

Hooked tags in general date from the mid 7th to the 11th centuries. The decoration on this one resembles rouletting, although it is not clear how it was made. This style of decoration is far more common on later medieval objects, perhaps arguing for a relatively late date for this hooked tag, in the 11th century.
