Title
Early Medieval buckle
Description
English: A copper alloy buckle frame which is from the Early Medieval period. The frame is D-shaped with a pointed outer edge which is zoomorphic; with curved ears projecting from the loop, incised eyes and a projecting snout forming the pointed terminal. The bar is straight but narrowed with a central notch in the top. Two hinge loops project from the bar and there are scant remains of a separate bar passing through them. The pin is missing but would have been attached to the outer bar, resting in the notch of the inner bar. The buckle is 28.7mm long, 24mm wide and 6.5mm thick. The frame is in good condition with an even dark brown patina that is slightly chipped in places. The pin, most of the outer bar and the plate are missing. Buckles of this sort are thought to date from the tenth century (Finds Recording Guide by Geake, 2001).
