Title
Early Medieval buckle.jpg
Description
English: Cast copper alloy buckle with integral plate length 35mm, width 19mm, thickness 9mm, weight 5.5g. Openwork buckle plate which is shaped like a dragon. The head of the beast forms the terminal of the plate, the head has a narrow snout, behind which is an arched eyebrow ridge and at the back of the head is a small curved ear, the mouth and oval eye are both made from incised lines.

The body runs down at a 45 degree angle across the plate and gently widens from the neck to the waist, which then narrows to the tail, there are six dots that run down the length of the neck and body. At the mid-section of the body a wing protrudes down and outwards, the tips curve round to connect to the head and the tail closing off the bottom edge, the top of the body has a low double arched projection that is the second wing. The tall forms the frame of the buckle, this is oval in plan with an oval cross-section, this tail arcs round to connect with the back of the beast. A hole in the centre of the forward edge of the buckle plate is where the pin would have been attached. On the reverse side of the body is a square section integral rivet.

The artefact has been effected by corrosion resulting the loss of it original patina leaving a pitted mid brown surface.

Artefacts such as this have been found in excavations from Gotland, Sweden where openwork buckles are more typical from the Ringerike and Urnes styles these example were dated to the 11th to early 12th century.
