Title |
Early Medieval buckle |
||
Description |
English: A copper alloy buckle with riveted plate dating from the early medieval period. The buckle still has the pin in position. The frame is a rounded oval, almost circular in section, and with a narrowed pin bar. The plate is rectangular and is folded round the bar and secured with three copper alloy rivets at the open end, two of which are surviving. The pin is looped through a slot in the plate. It is decorated with a raised circular area at the bar end, which is decorated with an incised X. It has a length of 23.99mm, width 21.24mm, thickness 2.72mm, weight 4.19g. Compare NMS-A72993, Cam-011E10 and IOW-2D2065. A 5th - 7th date is most likely. The buckle is in very good condition and has a rich smooth green patina, with the pin being more yellow. |
