Early Medieval lead alloy suspended 'bun' weight |
||
Description |
English: Early Medieval lead alloy suspended 'bun' weight. The use of weights of this form with inserted objects is considered typical of Anglo-Scandinavian practice. It is circular in plan and sub oval in section. It is undecorated apart from central depressions (each approximately 20mm across) on both faces that may have once held inserted material. It retains the remnants of its iron wire suspension loop, but this may be a later addition. Probably dates to between c700 and c1000 AD.
The diameter is 60mm, thickness 35mm, and the weight is 867.9g. The distribution of weights of this description on the database is consistent with areas of intensive Anglo-Scandinavian influence which supports their attribution to this period and culture.
