Title
Early Medieval mount (plan, profile and reverse).
Description
English: Early Medieval (c. 6th century) mount: The copper alloy mount is a trefoil in plan which has a central boss and the arms, which are rounded triangles in plan, protrude from the boss. The arms are each decorated with a border of double-stranded grooves with transverse grooves forming a row of blocks. This decoration is more visible in the crevices near the boss, and this is where gilding remains. In profile the boss and arms are domed. The majority of the upper surface is abraded so has no gilding, and no decoration, if there were any decoration, is visible. The reverse of the mount is slightly hollow, with a slight lip around the edges. The mount measures 29.38mm long, 35.01mm wide, 6.46mm thick and weighs 7.6g.

The artefact, due to its hollow back is more likely to be a mount rather than a trefoil brooch, perhaps a harness mount. Leahy (pers comm.) suggests the chip-carved decoration, or what remains of it, may be Anglo-Saxon Style I which dates to broadly the 6th century.
