Title
Early Medieval or Medieval Cooking Vessel
Description
English: 24 sherds from hand made cooking vessels of mid-tenth to early fifteenth century date. Five are rim sherds with hooked rims and the remaining nineteen are body sherds. The gritty earthenware fabric is tempered with Upper Greensand-derived angular chert and flint (up to 2-3mm), rounded quartz, red mudstone and limestone (up to 1mm). Most of the sherds have oxidised orange surfaces and a reduced grey core, although two are externally oxidised, with reduced cores and internal surfaces and two others are more comprehensively oxidised. The cooking vessels were probably fairly locally made. The fabric is similar to material found at Haycroft Farm, Membury, Devon, during excavations in 2000-1 (Allan and Langman 2002).
