Title
Early Medieval or Medieval Cooking Vessel
Description
English: Three sherds from unglazed hand made cooking vessels of mid-tenth to early fifteenth century date. One sherd is a body sherd and the other two are rims, one everted and one plain and rounded. The gritty earthenware fabric is tempered with Upper Greensand-derived angular chert and flint (up to 2-3mm), rounded quartz, red mudstone and limestone (up to 1mm). All three sherds have oxidised orange surfaces and a reduced grey core. The cooking vessels were probably fairly locally made. The fabric is similar to material found at Haycroft Farm, Membury, Devon, during excavations in 2000-1 (Allan and Langman 2002). Total weight: 45.88g
