Title |
Early Medieval stirrup terminal |
||
Description |
English: An Early Medieval, copper-alloy stirrup terminal with trilobate, foot-like form. At the top is an incomplete tube which runs with open reverse down the back of the terminal; it flares to a closed end on the reverse at the lower end. The tube would have fitted around the iron stirrup and the inside and edges of the tube have some signs of iron corrosion staining. The lower end of the terminal flares out to end in three projecting rounded 'toes'. The central toe is slimmer and projects out approximately 2mm from the base. The left and right toes are wider and more blunt but are very corroded and may have projected more in their original state; the underside of the 'foot' is flat. This terminal is a Williams type L; Williams 1997 (FRG Datasheet 24), fig 5, and dates to the late Anglo-Saxon period, 11th century. |
