Title
Early Medieval wrist clasp
Description
English: Cast copper-alloy fragment of a wrist clasp dating from the Early Medieval period. The obverse is decorated with a typical pattern made up of transverse grooves, lines and 'X's as well as two (possibly three) rows of punched circlets while the reverse is plain. The complete artefact would have had two or three small loops for attachment to a sleeve on one side (one loop remains) and a hook or bigger loop on the other side to be hooked into the wrist clasp on the other side of the sleeve. Wrist clasps are typical dress accessories of the Anglian female dress costume and date from the Early Medieval period, ca. AD500-600.
