Title
Early Medieval wrist clasp
Description
English: A copper-alloy early Anglo-Saxon sleeve or wrist clasp of Hines Form B20, dating from the late 5th to 6th century (Hines 1993, 64-5). It is a catch piece, and consists of a rectangular loop projecting from the centre of front edge of a narrow, longitudinal raised bar. On the other side of the bar is a flat plate, the rear edge of which is made up of two semicircles in plan, each pierced with a circular sewing hole, between three isosceles triangles. The triangles are not quite of the same size; the central triangle projects slightly further than the two outer ones. Along the edge of the bar and the two ends of the plate are horseshoe-shaped (elongated crescent) punch marks. The clasp has a dark green patina. It is 39.3mm long, 20mm wide and 3.5mm thick. It weighs 8.16g. It was found at a newly discovered cemetery site with other objects of the same date. A similar example is SF-32A016.
