Title |
Early Palaeloithic handaxe. |
||
Description |
English: Palaeolithic ovate flint axe, Type K (Wymer 1968 typology). Bifacially worked, with cortex on both sides, suggesting it has been knapped on a flint plaque (hence no bulb of percussion as it was not made on a flake). At least five flake scars on one surface, and at least seven on the other. Relatively fresh condition, not very worn. Some recent damage (probably plough damage), particularly to the right side of one surface, exposing fresh flint. Sandy light orange cortex (c.7%), light grey flint with dark grey and cream mottling (where exposed), and orange-yellow patina. Length 86.2mm, width 61mm, thickness 23mm, weight 136.2g. |
