Title
Early Saxon square-headed brooch (drawn by Jason Gibbons)
Description
English: Early Saxon head-plate and top knob from a copper-alloy cruciform brooch. Originally cast in one piece, they are now separate but joining; the fragment is in abraded condition and the bow and foot of the brooch are missing. The inner panel of the headplate consists of a pair of figure-of-eight knots in counter-relief within a frame of three lines of triangular stamps. The top knob has a projecting florid moulding. On the reverse of the head-plate there is a double pin lug (one lug incomplete). Breaks are ancient, except for where the top-knob joins in the centre of the upper edge. Width 45mm, surviving length 53mm. It belongs to Leeds and Pocock's (1971) Group IVb (e). Late 6th century.
