Title
Early medieval buckle
Description
English: Small oval copper-alloy buckle frame, 20 mm wide and 10 mm long. The bar is narrowed with sharp steps to either end, but not offset. In the centre of the bar is a low step suggesting wear from the hinge loops of a plate. The rest of the frame is circular in cross-section, swelling very slightly to a maximum of just over 2 mm in diameter. Such small oval buckles are particularly characteristic of 7th- and early 8th-century Anglo-Saxon costume, but can occasionally be found in the 6th century too.
