Title
Early medieval copper alloy buckle
Description
English: Medieval buckle; Cast copper alloy single loop buckle with openwork design. The buckle has a D-shaped frame which widens and deepens towards the back of the frame to give a broad, concave, 3-dimensional cross section. This is decorated in openwork moulding that appears to be abstract in design. Buckles of this type have been recorded with animals depicted on the frame, see DENO-9A9831. The pin bar is recessed, narrow and circular in cross section. Dated to the late 11th or 12th centuries. KENT-BF2C37 and HAMP-1F10A7 are similar buckles of this date and NMS-9BBAE2 has similar stylistic features, although it does not have the openwork element to the design.
