Title
Early medieval hooked clasp
Description
English: A complete copper alloy early medieval hooked clasp, dating from c. 9th to early 12th century AD. The clasp is Class D, type 1. The clasp is one piece of copper alloy sheeting. The main oval panel is engraved with a Y shaped motif, this has a series of raised ribs running along the centre. In the panels inbetween each arm of the Y is filled with possible interlace, although this is very worn. Around the edge of the circular panel is a border of incised squares. Originally there would have been two rounded attachment knops with pierced circular holes on one edge, these are worn and broken, and only part of one remains. On the opposite edge projects the intergral hook, which has two incised lines at the base of the hook, then narrows and curves round to the point. A hole has been pierced almost in the centre of the oval panel, and at the top near one of the attachment loops. The hooked tag has a light green patina, and measures 32.6mm in length, 22.1mm in width, 2.2mm in maximum thickness, and weighs 2.40g.

A similar hooked clasp can be seen in Read 2008, page 28, number 113.
