Title
Early medieval stirrup terminal
Description
English: An early-medieval, 11th-12th century cast copper-alloy, zoomorphic stirrup terminal. The terminal is concave on the back with the residue of a glue or solder in-situ. The front of the terminal is cast to represent an animal's face with bulbous eyes and flaring nostrils. This is probably the seperately-cast terminal from a stirrup side sheath. Early stirrups were constructed using copper-alloy sheaths which covered the entire sides of the stirrup. Some zoomorphic terminals were cast integrally with the side sheath but others had the terminal cast seperately.

For a similar example from Shipdham, Norfolk see Geake, H (ed.) Portable Antiquities Scheme report, pages 329-332, fig. 3a. Medieval Britain and Ireland in 2004.
