Title
Early to late Post Medieval cast lead or lead alloy uniface circular 4oz avoirdupois pan weight
Description
English: Early to late Post Medieval cast lead or lead alloy uniface circular avoirdupois pan weight. The obverse has a thick raised rim with the worn remains of pattern, possibly a Tudor rose, in the depression. The reverse is flat and undecorated. The weight equates to 4 ounces or quarter of an avoirdupois pound (113.4g). Dates to between c1500 and c1800 AD.

The diameter is 39mm and the weight 113.05g.

Similar records on the database include CORN-9EA6E2, SWYOR-665F67, and CORN-CF5201.

Read (2001) illustrates a similar pan weight with a raised rim on page 113, Fig.79, No.875, which is dated from the 17th to the 18th century. Bailey (1993) illustrates a very similar example on page 33, No.43, but does not date it. Biggs & Withers (2000) illustrate a similar example of a 4 ounce weight on page 54, Fig.5, but with a stamp that dates it to the Elizabethan period.

Egan (2005) illustrates a similar lead pan (lay) weight with a raised edge on page 163, Fig.160, No.838, which is dated from c.1630-1650.

Helen Geake writes: "It is very difficult to establish hard and fast rules with lead weights, as we have little material from excavated contexts to compare. The function of lead weights would have varied, from spindle whorls to fishing weights to trade weights." Lead weights are very imperfectly understood currently. It is hoped that by recording them as often as possible, a large body of data that can be studied will be built up."
