RAROTONGA: ITS PEOPLE AND ITS PRESENTCONDITION The people of the Cook or Hervey Group, which comprisesthe islands of Rarotonga, Aitutaki, Mangaia, Atiu, Mauke,and Miti-aro, together with nine lesser islets, form a con-necting ethnic link between the polished Tahitian, and theruder and more warlike New Zealander. All three races alike,and several others of the light-brown Ocean peoples, callthemselves by the national name of Maori. Even the wildMarquesans style themselves Maoi. The word is an adjec-tive meaning native, indigenous, aboriginal, autochthonous.It is, undoubtedly, a Semitic word borrowed from the earlyArab sea-rovers from Bassorah, who, as can be clearly shownfrom any intelligent study of the Ocean languages, formedmore or less permanent settlements in Polynesia.
