The gymnastic exercises already described areadapted to its development. Serratus posticus superior (Fig. 5), a thin flat muscleIts upper attachment is chiefly to the spines of the lastcervical, and two or three upper dorsal vertebrge. The lowerattachment is to the second, third, fourth, and fifth ribs, alittle beyond their angles. Its function is to elevate the upper ribs, and it is there-fore a muscle of inspiration. Serratus posticus inferior (Fig. 5, ii). The lowerattachment is to the spines of the lower two dorsal and uppertwo or three lumbar vertebrae, passing outwards, upwardsand forwards. It is attached by four fleshy digitations to thelower borders of the last four ribs. Its function is to draw the lower ribs downwards andmore backwards, and therefore it is a muscle of expiration,but it is also a muscle of inspir
