ailed Flycatcher is an abundant bird in Texas, and is found asfar north as Indian Territory and Southwestern Missouri. It is a commonspecies throughout Mexico and Central America. 303. Gray Kingbird—tyrannus dominicensis. Creamy white,markedwith large blotches and spots of purple, reddish-brown and dark purplish-brown and lilac; the eggs are not distinguishable from those of the BeeMartin; there is also the usual variation in size and shape. Nesting habitsare similar. Hab. West Indies; Florida regularly; north to Carolina rarely, to Massachusetts accidentally. 304. Kingbird; Bee Martin—tyrannus carolinensis. White, witha more or less roseate tinge, marked with blotches of purple, brown,reddish-brown and lilac; four or five, sometimes six in number, andmeasure about i. by .71; with great variations in size. The Kingbirdbreeds throughout its range, placing the nest in an orchard or garden, orby the wayside, on a horizontal bough or fork at a moderate height; Copyyight 1886 PLATE IV.

NESTS AND EGGS OF NORTH AMERICAN BIRDS. being bulky as well as openly situated it is as easily found as that of theRobin. Exteriorally it is ragged and loose, but well cupped and brimmed,consisting of twigs, weedstalks, grasses, rootlets, bits of vegetable-downand wool firmly matted together. The lining is of slender grasses, chickenfeathers, horse hair, fibres, rootlets and wool, used singly or combined invarious proportions. Hab. Temperate North America, but chiefly Eastern United States, north to 57- or further; west toRocky Mountains; rare or casual on the Pacific slope. 305. Couchs Kingbird—tyrannus melancholicus couchi. Rich buff;the blotches similar in color to those on the eggs of the Kingbird, but morenumerous, and they are generally smaller; irregularly distributed over theentire surface, but massed about the greatest diameter.
