Since I wrote you last (when wewere freezing in a cold rain) we have had the most intenseheat I ever felt, and it has been a struggle to get up at allin the morning and get down to my bath. On returning Iwas fairly swimming in perspiration. No doubt it is verygood for one. Altho we are quite alone I love this place and the restfulquiet of it. This Sunday morning he came partly on hisbicycle and partly by train to spend the day and it is justbeginning to rain, so I suppose he will have to go back bytrain. KOENIGSTEIX Rhine and we have just come to the conclusion that we willgo direct to Sigmaringen from here and take her home with usand perhaps go after a visit of 4 days to meet Frank and Sam,returning to Hohenstadt for the silver wedding on the 17th.Clifford and I made a beautiful excursion after lunch onWednesday. Taking a two-horse carriage we drove throughthe pine woods, up and down hill to Koenigstein, where thereis a magnificent ruin, on a very high point above the townand which I climbed up to. It was a royal residence andfortress destroyed by the French in 1796. Then we tookcoffee in the town and came back by the village of Cronberg, 375 EIGHT JOURNEYS ABROAD a quaint place with frescoed houses and doll-house windows.Those old villages have very steep roofs, covered with redtiles, and nothing could be more beautiful than the view froma high point over the dull red tiled roofs, nestled among thegreen trees.
