ed so that the action ismechanically independent on each truck. Two pairs of12-in. brake cylinders apply the brakes, and separate valvesand cutout cocks are supplied, so that the pair of cylinderscontrolling either truck may be cut out without affectingthe other. The draft rigging consists of a standard M.C.B. verticalplane coupler, with yoke, springs and follower plates, de-signed to comply with the railroad companys specifications. This draft rigging, as well as the spring buffers, is mountedupon the outer end frames of the trucks. This arrange-ment insures that all pulling and buffing stresses are trans-mitted on the same horizontal line through the draft rig-ging, side frames and connecting hinge pin of the trucks. The center pins and cab platform framing are entirely re-lieved of all longitudinal stresses except those due to theweight of the cab, platform and equipment. Center pins and side bearings are provided on the run-ning gear for the support of the cab. The center pin on the

Detroit River Tunnel Locomotive—End View A end is a swivel pin, having a turning motion only, whilethat one the B end has a turning and sliding motion. Thisconstruction allows the longitudinal motion necessary totake care of the variation in distance between the truckcenter pins occurring as the locomotive passes aroundcurves. The side bearings on the A end have a clearanceof about )i in. when the cab is level, while thoseon the B end have a clearance of about 12 in. The resultof this arrangement is that under ordinary circumstancesthe cab is carried on a three-point suspension, since the sidebearings on the A end support all normal rolling action ofthe cab, the side bearings on the B end coming into playunder abnormal conditions only. The cab platform is built of four 10-in. longitudinalchannels running the whole length of the locomotive, whichare tied together by the end channels and bolster plates.Such ballast as is necessary to bring the weight of the loco-motive up to the requi
