The direction of running is re-versed from time to time to prevent un-even wear of the guard rails and tires,and plaster casts of both are made atfrequent intervals to study the characterof wear. The roadbed consists partly of wood-en ties and partly of steel ties, both laidwith varying spacings and in different kinds of rock bal-last. Instead of placing two ties close together under thejoints, the steel tie sections have been fitted with a doubleor Siamese tie under every joint. No detailed data haveyet been given out on the results of the roadbed trials, butin general the object is to determine how much each type other, which was installed during the past year, has a thirdwire to equalize the effects of expansion and contraction inthe rest of the system. Both overhead systems are in-stalled for 6000-volt, single-phase current, and have provedsatisfactory in every detail.
