Wood Block Pavement Filled with Barretts Paving Pitch The Ideal Pavement Filler A good filler for the joints of brick or block pavements must have certainqualifications. It must, for instance, seal up the joints and make themwatertight so as to prevent water from reaching the foundation. That re-quirement cuts out sand filler from consideration, since sand is not watertight. A good filler must be elastic so as to provide for the expansion and con-traction of the blocks in changing temperatures. That cuts out cement,whose rigidity accounts indirectly for cracks and breaks in brick pavements. It also cuts out asphalt, which, being compressible but not ductile, yieldsto the expansion of the blocks but does not stick to the blocks when they con-tract.
