Long Island Steel Car—Plan and Sections of Underframe June 17, 1911.) ELECTRIC RAILWAY JOURNAL. 1057 back into pockets in the side of the car body and are openedand closed by the Gibbs mechanical door-operating device asin the older cars. The trap doors over the steps are hingedagainst the end of the body and extend out flush with the sideof the car. They have a coil spring on the hinge rod which isstrong enough to raise the door when the floor catch is released.In the 41-ft. cars, which are narrower, the trap door overlapsthe platform floor plates when closed and is arranged to slideout on the hinge rod beyond the side of the car so as to bridgethe space between the car and the platform of those stationswhere the platform is level with the floor of the car. The 41-ft. cars have square windows in the ends of the vesti-bules, but the new cars have circular windows resembling theportholes in the side of a ship. The glass in the window on theleft-hand side is fixed in a solid malleable
