Again, the slot rails and entire conduit con-struction had to be made heavier with the side conduitbecause it had to support the weight of the cars, whereasthe center conduit supports simply the vehicular traffic.It will also be much easier to remove the slot rails and getat the conductors in the conduit with the center construc-tion, and the construction at switches and turnouts will bemuch simplified. The method of conduit construction, according to thereport printed in the foreign paper mentioned, seems tobe very similar to that followed in New York. After atrench has been excavated, the yokes and the slot rails andrunning rails are set in place and aligned. Then a sheet-iron liner is inserted, and the concrete is put in place. Thewooden blocks used to hold the yokes and rails in placeare then removed, and the space occupied by them is filledwith concrete. Paris Tramway Rehabilitation—Double-Truck Trail Car and Single-Truck Motor Car for Light Service is placed at the side of the track instead of at the center,and its slot rails are used instead of a rail for one sideof the track. This plan has now been abandoned, and inall new track construction in Paris the conduit is in thecenter of the track, as in New York and Washington. Thestandard depth of the excavation is 0.88 m (34KThe yoke is 0.78 m (30*4 in.) in depth and rests on a layerof concrete 0.10 m (4 in.) in thickness. On certain partsof the line, however, a shallower conduit is used wherethe circumstances did not permit the standard form ofconstruction without great cost. In an article which appeared in a recent issue of Lln-dnstrie des Tramways by M. A. Mariage, general managerof the company, the reasons are given for the change fromthe side conduit to the center conduit.
