by L. Thormann, chief engineer elec-tric traction of this railway, some interesting data arepresented on features of line construction and opera-tion. On open sections the double catenary standardcommon on other European single-phase lines is used,but the construction in the tunnel is special. The tun-nel catenary is of duplex wire, comprising a steel coreof 6 mm (No. 3 B & S) diameter and plating of 1.25mm (No. 11 B & S) copper. The height of the trolleywire above the head of the rails is 6 m (19.7 ft.) to7 m (23 ft.) at stations and 4.8 m (15.7 ft.) in thetunnels. The method of carrying the double insulatorsand trolley in the tunnel is shown in the accompanyingillustrations. The supporting points are 22 m (72.2ft.) to 28 m. (91.8 ft.). TELEPHONE AND TELEGRAPH CONDITIONS Between Kandergrund and Ausserberg the telephoneand telegraph wires were placed underground in paper-covered, air-insulated cables. Elsewhere these lineswere placed on wooden poles, the wires being transposed
