ance to use groundclose to the center of thecity for track-storage pur-poses, presumably becauseof the high value attachedto it. Yet it frequentlyhappens that a companyhas a piece of ground cen-trally located that has been idle for many years waiting for a price, while thecompany has meantime been paying high haulage costsfor taking material to and from a material yard locatedin the outskirts of the city on less valuable ground. Upto the present time this has also been the situation withthe Denver Tramway. Itwas difficult to keep men long in this material yardbecause of the hard work which they were required todo, and rails, ties, paving blocks and cement sheds wereplaced here and there around the needlessly large area, wherever the whim of a yard man dictated, or in theonly spot available at the moment.

DENVER STORAGE YARD FIG SHOWING DERRICK While this old yard was in use a small piece of groundadjacent to the companys power house and located lessthan 1 mile from the heart of the business district stoodidle. This had been purchased originally for the storage of coal, but a dif-ferent scheme had laterbeen adopted. Because ofthe small area involvedand the advantage ofits central location, itwas an economicalplan to utilize this prop-erty for the purposes ofthe track department. Itcontains approximately 2acres of ground, but the.-pace beneath the Four-teenth Street viaductalong one side of the yard, and the space beneath aright-angle approach tothis viaduct which ex-tends along the back endof the yard, add about an-other quarter acre ofground which is also usedfor storage purposes. General Layout ofMaterial Yard As shown in the full-page drawing, a big der-rick with a 100-ft. boomis located at practicallythe center of the yard. The space within the 100-ft. radius is reserved for 1—gene
