The motormen are in-structed to use the whistle as they have always doneand to use the bell for an additional alarm. Oneconsideration in this connection was that it is con-siderably cheaper to operate the bell than it is toblow the whistle repeatedly. The bell consumes 0.7cu.ft. of air per minute while the whistle consumes40 cu.ft. per minute. The officials of the railroad havealso found that the novelty of the bell has been anexcellent advertisement for the cars of the Interstatecompany. Furthermore, the traffic police of Indian-apolis have encouraged the motormen to sound thisbell at the main intersections where they are stationed,as it is very effective in helping them clear the streets. This has been accomplishedin a way which has not only given an exceptionallyeven weight distribution but has left every piece ofapparatus accessible. These new passenger cars werebuilt by the Cincinnati Car Company. Rebuilt Cars for Trailers As it was planned to use trailers with the new motorcars in the fast limited service between Indianapolisand Louisville, the Interstate Company is planning toprovide the trailers by rebuilding old motor passengercars, one of which has been completed and placed inservice thus far. This rebuiding work was done bythe American Car & Foundry Company, Jeffersonville,Ind. While of wood construction, the trailer was givtnthe appearance of a steel car by putting steel plateson the sides. The underframe was strengthened byusing pressed-steel sections to reinforce the I-beams andchannels. The ends were rebuilt to conform to the samerad
